Every Day is Earth Day!

Today, Wednesday April 22nd, marks the 50th annual Earth Day! This year’s theme is ‘climate action’, an overarching topic to encourage environmental protection, clean living and sustainable habits. Although many people support the idea of Earth Day, it is important to remember that climate change won’t be solved by just turning off their lights for an hour once a year – these practices must be implemented in everyday life.

Having to transition into a more sustainable lifestyle can seem – at first glance – quite daunting! After all, it is human nature – we love the comfort of routine. However, through incorporating small actions to our everyday lives, you might find that it’s actually not as hard as it seems.

In honor of Earth day, we thought it would be relevant to talk about some habits and lifestyle changes that might help in reducing our carbon footprint.

Say goodbye to food waste
How does food waste link to sustainability? According to the WWF, one-third of the food we produce goes to waste every year. That’s enough food to feed every undernourished person in the world. But it’s not just that – food waste also means ‘throwing away’ all the resources that goes into producing, packaging and transporting food. By simply planning ahead or creatively using leftovers, we’re able to avoid producing the amount of methane worth 37 million cars of greenhouse gases.

Go out and get moving! #Exercise
Help yourself AND help the planet! We all know the benefits of exercise: weight loss, great for mental health, reduces risks of heart disease, and the list goes on. Instead of driving 5 minutes to your grocery, why not walk or bike there instead? You’ll feel a lot better about those slimmed legs when it’s paired with environmental protection!

Dry your clothes, the old fashioned way
An average dryer machine uses 4 kWh or 1.8 kg of CO2. When you add that up over the course of weeks (or years!) a single household will be able to save tonnes of CO2 just by opting to air dry clothes. Not to mention, dryers use a lot of energy. Why not reduce CO2 while also reducing your electricity bill! Sounds like a win-win to us.

Be your own barista!
We get it. Most everyone needs their daily dose of coffee to get their day started. But instead of buying that overpriced Starbucks coffee that’s packaged in a single-use cup, plastic lid and cardboard holder, why not opt to make your own coffee? It’s extremely easy and to start you off, here’s a list of easy and quick coffee recipes to make at home: https://www.roastycoffee.com/instant-coffee-recipes/

Reduce meat consumption

You probably heard this before, but we want to emphasize that you don’t need to cut meat out completely to have a more sustainable diet! Instead, try to reduce your meat intake by eating a diet similar to the Mediterranean diet – filled with lots of nuts, fish, and veggies (with the occasional red meat meal or two)! Studies show that if everyone adopted this diet, we’d be able to curb climate change by 15% by 2050. That’s equal to taking pollution of a billion cars off the roads – all while still being able to enjoy meat once in a while.

Turn off your electronic devices at night
Don’t worry, we all do it. It’s extremely convenient to simply close your laptop lids or put your phone down without shutting it down. However, according to the Energy Saving Trust, appliances left on standby contribute 4 million tonnes of excess CO2 each year. If you were already contemplating a phone detox at night, do it for Mother Nature’s sake!

Say “NO” to fast fashion
With many fast fashion options available today, we tend to forget that every cheap piece of clothing has costs that go faaaarrrr beyond what we see on the price tag – whether it be on the unfair low pay to workers or to the environment. Our biggest tips? Invest in timeless classic pieces made from recycled or natural fibers (instead of those cheaply made items that fall apart in a matter of months)! Your wallet and your sustainable conscious will thank you. Moreover, make sure to support ethical brands that prioritize sustainability, plan ahead, and do your research. If you’re looking for some sustainable swaps this Earth Day, check out our reusable swimwear! In the words of Greta Thunberg, “you are never too small to make a difference”!
